Interview with UConn OC Nunzio Campanile

An exclusive interview with the Huskies' new offensive coordinator, shortly before he met with the media this week.

Last week, I sat down with Nunzio Campanile, the former Rutgers and Syracuse assistant coach who was a longtime success as a HS coach at two of the best programs in New Jersey. He was announced as UConn’s new offensive coordinator in January.

Campanile joins the staff as a newcomer to head coach Jason Candle and his system, but he offers a lot of experience recruiting in the northeast and leading teams or units. At Rutgers, he was quickly thrust into offensive coordinator and interim head coaching duties, and then stayed on with Greg Schiano’s staff after everyone else on the previous one was not retained.

He survived another coaching transition at Syracuse, where he was hired by Dino Babers and stayed under Fran Brown. At UConn, he’s entering another transition situation, but at least it’s not a firing.

In our conversation, Campanile shared the details of his extensive coaching roots, the opportunity ahead for UConn football, and how the staff is working together in the early days of this new era.

Earlier this week, Candle, Campanile, and defensive coordinator Ryan Manalac, who we also interviewed 1-on-1 earlier this month, spoke to the media and held a panel for fans before the St. John’s game in PeoplesBank Arena.
