Benedict confirms that UConn is bowl bound
The Huskies are bowling. The official announcement may not come until Sunday, but here's what the final projections say.
Early Monday Morning, athletic director David Benedict confirmed what we had hoped was true since UConn won its 6th game.
UConn is bowl bound.
While some bowl announcements are coming out, Benedict did not specify a bowl game or opponent, but has at least confirmed that a postseason game is in the cards for UConn football.
My guess is that some of this is dependent on who gets into the College Football Playoff and the ripple effect of who gets certain other bowl placements, and that UConn has a primary bowl and a backup bowl or bowls that it will find itself in depending on how things shake out. This is a pure guess.
Speaking of pure guesses, here are the final bowl projections for UConn from around the media world:
Athlon Sports - Cure Bowl vs Marshall (Dec. 16 -- Orlando, FL)
CBS Sports - Quick Lane Bowl vs Eastern Michigan (Dec. 26 -- Detroit, MI)
ESPN - Two predictions:
Cure Bowl vs. Georgia Southern
Gasparilla Bowl vs. Wake Forest (Dec. 23 -- Tampa, FL)
24/7 Sports - Gasparilla Bowl vs Duke
Action Network - Camellia Bowl vs. App St (Dec. 27 -- Montgomery, AL)
The Athletic - Boca Raton Bowl vs. Marshall (Dec. 20 -- Boca Raton, FL)
Sports Illustrated - Lending Tree Bowl vs. Southern Miss (Dec. 17 -- Mobile, AL)
Many UConn fans are still hoping for a Fenway Bowl bid. It's still possible, but uncertain.
Right now the projections have an ACC team against a middling AAC team, like Houston or ECU. Perhaps UConn is a more attractive name to have playing in Boston than that random AAC squad, especially if it's an ACC team UConn has some history with, like Pitt. I'm not sure how much we'd want a re-match against BC or Syracuse, but one of those two could also potentially be slotted for the Fenway Bowl. Those would be a big deal, except as rematches of a regular-season game I'm not sure if the novelty is there for the fans or for organizers.
We'll probably find out on Sunday after the final week of regular season games are played. But at least we know now for sure, UConn is bowling! What a season!
