Campanile joins the staff as a newcomer to head coach Jason Candle and his system, but he offers a lot of experience recruiting in the northeast and leading teams or units. At Rutgers, he was quickly thrust into offensive coordinator and interim head coaching duties, and then stayed on with Greg Schiano’s staff after everyone else on the previous one was not retained.

He survived another coaching transition at Syracuse, where he was hired by Dino Babers and stayed under Fran Brown. At UConn, he’s entering another transition situation, but at least it’s not a firing.

In our conversation, Campanile shared the details of his extensive coaching roots, the opportunity ahead for UConn football, and how the staff is working together in the early days of this new era.

The former walk-on at Cincinnati played for the Bearcats in the heyday of the Big East under Mark Dantonio and Brian Kelly before getting a shot in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills. His defensive coordinator at Cincinnati was Pat Narduzzi, who was also the DC at Michigan State, where Manalac began his coaching career as a graduate assistant.

After Narduzzi became the head coach at Pitt, Manalac joined his staff as LB coach, a job he held for five years before joining Candle’s staff for his third defensive coordinator post.

The Husky defense gave them a chance with some stops in the third quarter but the Orange had too much offensive firepower and UConn’s offense was not doing much. The lead got back to two TDs in the fourth before the Huskies mounted a late drive for a touchdown. They attempted an onside kick after scoring with 1:39 left to cut the lead to seven but didn’t recover.

After all, Jim Mora’s squad has already surpassed last season’s win total. This is the best start to a season for UConn since 2009 and has a good chance of ending as the best season since then.

For a program that has not seen a winning season since 2010, things are shaping up nicely. If we told you before the season that the team started 4-2, won three big blowouts including its FCS matchup, has a lockdown defense that can win games on its own, and a whole slew of proven playmakers on offense with stable O-line play, you would absolutely take that!

Husky football fans know better than to get overconfident, but it’s hard not to be at this point. The remaining games on the schedule are looking weaker by the week and the toughest game on the schedule, a visit to Syracuse, is now a toss-up according to most projections. Every other game has a 70 percent chance of winning or higher, according to ESPN’s FPI.

Buffalo, a 3-1 team that raised its relevance by taking down NIU, the previously 23rd-ranked team that had just defeated Notre Dame, is visiting the Rent for the first time since 2012.

UConn, a team many were ready to write off after a big loss at Maryland to start the season, seems to have righted the ship with three consecutive encouraging performances, including over 100 points scored in two wins at the Rent.

The Huskies are looking to get their third win once the contest kicks off at noon on Saturday. Aman and Graham review the Huskies’ dominant FAU performance and preview the Buffalo matchup in this episode of the podcast.

Despite the disappointing elements, including tackling, injuries, penalties, and unforced errors, we end with a discussion on the positive elements displayed and what UConn can build on going forward.

We also walked through UConn’s future opponents and how they fared in college football’s Week 1 action.

Like UConn, Maryland will have a new QB this year. But the Terps return a healthy chunk of their offensive playmakers and most key contributors on defense and are favored by around 20 points as they prepare to host UConn.

Still, the Huskies have a lot to prove. Even if they don’t win, a competitive showing would mean a lot against this power conference opponent. The podcast ends with a discussion of what we’re looking for out of Jim Mora’s squad in their first game of the season.

How much better they'll be remains to be seen, but for now, in early-July, we can bask in some traditional pre-season optimism and entertain the possibility of a bowl game again.

UConn’s offensive line is one of the major success stories of the Jim Mora era. The group has been performing above average for a G5 program while seeing impressive stability. Two of Sammis’ guys are off to the NFL this season: Christian Haynes, a two-time All-American, and Noel Ofori-Nyadu. Another key starter, center Yakiri Walker, transferred to Colorado. Overall, the group has seen strong retention, returning most of the guys who saw action last season.

Sammis was promoted to add the run game coordinator to his title in 2023 and now takes on the offensive coordinator duties in 2024, making it clear that Mora has progressively placed more faith in this guy’s abilities. With this move, UConn has probably opened up some coaching budget to add to the offensive staff at more junior positions in the near future.

Charlton joined UConn when head coach Jim Mora took over in 2022 and also held the associate head coach title. He was previously head coach for two seasons at Maine, where he spent four years in his first staff job after a stint as a GA at Boston College, his alma mater.

UConn went 6-7 in a promising first year under Mora, even though it was marred by injuries. While the offense was no juggernaut under true freshman Zion Turner, the overall competence on display was enough to make Husky fans excited about the future.

But after Nate Carter, Keelan Marion, and Aaron Turner transferred the following offseason, UConn didn’t recruit well enough in the portal or have the roster depth to replace or improve on its skill-position talent.

Despite the return of QB Ta’Quan Roberson along with most starters on the line and a loaded running back room, the Husky offense sputtered in 2023 as the team struggled to win games.

Mora’s brought in a new defensive coordinator, strength coach, and two new personnel hires this offseason. He’s also now in the market for a new leader of the offense, as well as a quarterbacks coach and possibly someone to bestow the associate head coach title upon.

With a transfer window opening in April, Mora and his staff will be looking to bolster the roster. They have a new defensive scheme to find players for and are still on the hunt for more playmaking talent on the other side of the ball.

Going into a 2024 season where the expectation is movement in the right direction, Jim Mora and his staff, including new defensive coordinator Matt Brock, are providing a necessary boost to morale this offseason.

They’re showing a willingness to evolve along with the college football landscape around them.

Brock brings a new scheme which will be a departure from what the team was running previously. He’ll have full control of the defense and staff, he said. It seems clear he wasn’t hired to be an extension of Mora but to bring something new to the program.

In his first interview with local media, Brock shared that Mora’s interest in him despite their schematic differences gave him confidence about the opportunity in Storrs.

“What we do is a pretty significant difference from what they had done,” Brock said. “But [Mora’s] willingness to embrace that and get energized by it, that gave me faith.”

Mora and his staff have also made moves in the transfer portal, where much more established talent is heading to Storrs this offseason compared to last. They’ve hired a general manager and director of player personnel to continue improvement on that front and hired a new director of strength and conditioning from Mississippi State, where Brock was also working last year.

Who is Matt Brock?

Matt Brock spent the last four seasons at Mississippi State, where he was promoted to defensive coordinator last season by then-head coach Zach Arnett.

Brock previously coached linebackers and special teams in Starkville under Arnett and the late Mike Leach and held similar roles at Washington State and Bowling Green before that.

At Mississippi State, Brock assumed playcalling duties during their bowl game in 2022. He comes to UConn with over a season’s worth of experience making calls for the Bulldogs. Arnett was fired with two games left in the 2023 season, making Brock a free agent.

“I think a place like UConn fits the kind of places I’ve been already,” Brock said. “You gotta do a good job of trying to evaluate and develop a unit that thrives on doing the things you can control well. You may not always be the most talented unit but you better be the hardest-playing, toughest, most physical defensive unit you can create.”

In his college days, Brock was an all-conference linebacker at Baker University, an NAIA school where he also started his coaching career as a graduate assistant. From there he spent one year as a quality control coach at Texas Tech before being promoted to inside linebackers coach.

While at Bowling Green, he was one of 56 nominees for the 2017 Broyles Award, given to the nation’s top assistant coach.

“I’ve drawn from everybody going back to my high school coach… I moved on to a college program that we were able to turn around… I worked with guys like Kliff Kingsbury, who I thought always did a good job of relating to players… Mike Leach’s consistent messaging and his expectation within the organization, I’ll always appreciate… Defensively, Zach Arnett, I worked for him the last four years… I’ve drawn from him on defensive philosophy and how to attack people.”

While a schematic change like this typically takes a few years to fully implement, Brock has indicated a willingness to work with the talent on hand.

“There’s no magic pill,” he explained. “Ultimately this is a player’s game… It’s our job to put them in a position to be successful, demand it…recruit, all those things that make a good program.”

What is the scheme?

It’s called the 3-3-5, a schematic choice that allows defenses to be “multiple” (the coaching buzzword of the decade) while having the best possible athletes on the field.

With three down linemen, three linebackers, and five defensive backs, the scheme features two hybrid positions, one at linebacker, and a nickel back or “middle safety,” as Brock called it.

“The first things that jump out to me schematically is that it's just so flexible," Brock told the Clarion Ledger in 2020. "You can get so many different looks, and it's not that complex for our players. But yet from the opposing offense's view, there's a lot there to prepare for."

Strategically, it’s a defense that makes sense for UConn in a few ways. The 3-3-5 has been known to be an answer to spread passing offenses, a concept that almost all teams use in some form.

From a recruiting standpoint, if traditional beefy tackles and taller edge rushers are being sought out by major (wealthier) programs, then some great DE/DT and DE/LB tweeners might be available for programs like UConn to recruit and offer a place to shine. A DB/LB tweener who’s either a step slow or not big enough to get a look from the top of the P4 could find a good-fit opportunity in this style of defense.

The defense has also been successful. Arnett, who brought the 3-3-5 to Mississippi State, has said that keeping offenses on their toes by mixing up the numbers on the line of scrimmage and unpredictable stunts and shifts contributed to his teams’ defensive success.

The Bulldogs’ “bend but don’t break” approach with six players in the box made them susceptible to the run but overall their defenses performed well.

Though the team finished 5-7 and 72nd in the country in overall efficiency last year, the Bulldogs were stronger defensively, ranked 49th in the country in FEI compared to an offense ranked 104th. The previous season, they finished 9-4 with the 14th-ranked defense and 14th overall ranking in FEI.

What does this mean for UConn?

Husky fans may recall a recent failed attempt to move to this defense when Randy Edsall took over in 2017 and hired Villanova’s Billy Crocker to be his defensive coordinator.

That didn’t go well, but it doesn’t mean it can’t work out for UConn this time. It should be fair to say that the shift to the 3-3-5 is not the reason things got so bad during that era…

Anyway, after a solid 2022, UConn’s front seven felt the departures of Ian Swenson and Brandon Bouyer-Randle in 2023, and Travis Jones from the year before, while the secondary suffered in part due to transfer defections. This year, Jackson Mitchell, Eric Watts, and a handful of other key contributors are moving on.

Some reinforcements have arrived, and one has to imagine Brock will lead the charge in the next portal window to add some more talent to fit his scheme.

Brock mentioned two unique positions — the hybrid linebacker and hybrid defensive back — that some players on the current roster may fit. But he’ll almost certainly want to bring in more guys to compete for playing time. No spot on the depth chart is safe.

Outlook

Changes are afoot within UConn football. Despite last year’s setback, the success of 2022 offers some hope that this coaching regime has what it takes to repair the downtrodden reputation of the program.

This offseason’s moves, including the talent added through the portal and multiple staff changes, show that the program and athletic department leadership are making sensible investments to push this in the right direction.

They have a long way back to FBS respectability but hope springs eternal as we get ready for spring football and to perhaps hear a few UConn players’ names called in the NFL Draft.

If college sports is about how you perform against your peers, the Huskies actually fared alright this season despite the bad record.

Many of their losses were expected, like those to NC State, Duke, Tennessee, and James Madison. Three of those schools have the all-important “power five” money and the other is a former FCS powerhouse situated in a recruiting hotbed that would have likely defeated UConn in each of the last five years regardless of FBS status.

Against Boston College, the 21-14 final score in a game where the players battled to the end was respectable considering it came against another monied opponent, though the contest was more lopsided than the score would suggest.

Against Utah State, Rice, and USF, the Huskies played competitive football. The offense demonstrated improvement; the defense was not great but at least opportunistic, and the Huskies lost two close games while winning one, aided by a 4-0 turnover margin in that one-score win over Rice despite giving up 471 yards to the Owls.

The Huskies’ worst performances came in the second and third games. It’s unfortunate that dropping those two is the whole reason this season has failed to meet expectations, but that’s college football.

Losing to Georgia State 35-14 and then letting FIU take a 24-3 halftime lead at Rentschler Field in an eventual loss the following week was the stretch where it slid too far. The departures of running backs Brian Brewton and Devontae Houston made it seem worse. UConn recovered to perform around the level that was expected before the season, but the 0-5 start punctuated by a missed extra point deflated all hope for anything good happening this season.

GSU is better than most thought, but not by that much (105th in FEI), there’s no reason for UConn to get out-classed like that. Against FIU, the Huskies did a good job of coming back to make it close, but it shouldn’t have gotten there. USU and USF were winnable, both arguably should have been victories.

The mood around the program would be a lot different if the season ended with five wins, obviously. They played well enough to do that, but couldn't close.

We will try to diagnose some of the season’s key coaching decisions in future articles but in the meantime, dedicated UConn fans are no doubt keeping an eye on the potential structural changes that may be occurring around the program this offseason.

Here are some of the possibilities:

Hire a defensive coordinator?

Since Lou Spanos left in August 2022, UConn has been without a defensive coordinator. It went the entire 2022 season without naming an interim or replacement and also went into 2023 in the same configuration, with head coach Jim Mora owning those duties. It’s starting to look like a problem.

The Husky defense took a step back in 2023. This can partially be attributed to personnel, a tougher schedule, and offensive struggles, but it’s also on the coaching. Mora himself has acknowledged that some big plays allowed were due to bad calls by the staff after the FIU and Utah State games.

In addition to the obvious benefits of defensive coordinators on game days and practice days, a veteran coach leading that side of the ball is also: a key recruiter, someone who contributes to the identity and culture of the team, and another adult in the room. A DC could serve as an interim head coach in a time of need, be the next head coach, or get hired to be a head coach elsewhere, which is also a good look.

For a program in desperate need of an identity, especially as an independent with limited natural rivals in a region where college football is not super popular, hiring a defensive coordinator seems like it could be a very logical step on the path to relevance and FBS competence.

Other staff changes

Mora has said that a lot of changes are in the works for the offseason, mostly detailing a plan to improve the roster via transfers because he wants to “win now.”

He did not specify whether “changes” also meant the coaching staff, but usually, we see a few moves here and there on any staff in the offseason.

UConn’s offense had an inconsistent growth pattern over the year, causing some observers to question if that side of the ball is in need of new leadership.

Judging the offense for poor performances against the likes of NC State, Duke, and Tennessee would not be fair. But scoring 14 against GSU, 17 against FIU, and 21 against USF, the 118th, 117th, and 126th-ranked defenses in the FEI efficiency rankings, is not good.

To be fair to offensive coordinator Nick Charlton, injuries decimated his unit in 2022 and transfer departures affected it in 2023. He brought in his former QB from Maine and made him the starter, but that did not go well. One could argue that this QB decision contributed to the sub-par performance against Georgia State and that the FIU game might’ve gone better if Ta’Quan Roberson had been starting from the opener.

I don’t think it’s time to move on from Charlton but, like his head coach, he’s on notice. If Roberson returns and they add a few more playmakers at the skill positions while keeping the line steady, the offense could continue to improve.

At this point, continuity is probably better than blowing it up unless Mora can bring in a big name or someone with better experience that would excite recruits and the fanbase.

The roster

Last year, UConn lost a number of key players to the transfer portal including running back Nate Carter and wide receivers Aaron Turner and Keelan Marion, who all ended up at P5 programs. This year, a similar exodus could occur. Running backs Brian Brewton and Devontae Houston are already on the portal list, as is wide receiver James Burns and defensive lineman Carter Hooper.

Mora has been vocal about the need for NIL money to improve the roster. Though it’ll be natural for players to leave, the retention of the current young stars is paramount and they’ll also need to be aggressive in adding more talent via transfer. This will be one of the major keys to success for 2024. Last offseason, some teams added as many as 40 new players. Mora said he’s looking to add 12 to 14 high-quality players.

The D’Amelio Collective has launched a fundraising campaign aiming to raise up to $100,000, which the collective’s founder Marc D’Amelio has said he will match in order to make progress on the approximately $1.5 million that Mora said is needed to field a competitive “group of five” team.

Like it or not, this is part of the future of college football. We’re not going to speculate on which names will leave yet, but one can assume that pretty much any productive or promising underclassman could be targeted.

The conference situation

Mora seems to feel quite strongly about this, and a lot of his peers in coaching have echoed the sentiment: UConn football needs to be in a conference. The obvious solution is to join one of the power fives, but that invite is not coming.

Being in a conference offers a path to the playoffs, rivalry games in November, the chance to play for division and league crowns, bowl ties, and a chance for players to be recognized as standout performers.

It also anchors the program to a recruiting footprint and a consistent set of opponents to measure itself against. With the playoff expanding and the independent ranks thinning after Army announced it’s joining the AAC, joining a conference — any conference — might make sense.

So, what are the possible solutions if, say, UConn was looking to join a league this offseason?

The easiest ones are the MAC, C-USA, or Sun Belt as football-only members. We don’t know how amenable anyone will be to this but those are the options out of the existing leagues. I’ve voiced my support for the Sun Belt because it’s a good G5 league with strong football cultures and reasonable geography in its East division. The MAC or C-USA would be far from ideal but may just need to be the call.

After that, UConn may want to consider starting its own league. The only easily available partner is UMass, after which they’ll have to get creative.

Candidates for this new league include Temple, East Carolina, and Buffalo from the AAC or MAC, and perhaps some successful FCS programs can be enticed to move up, like Villanova or Holy Cross. Delaware is moving up to join C-USA, ESPN’s Pete Thamel has reported. The new league could also grab Army and Navy and eventually Pitt, BC, and Syracuse if the ACC collapses the way the Pac-12 did.

Perhaps the Ivy League would be interested in something similar to what it does with hockey in the ECAC and join up with a crew of other schools in order to bring more relevance to its athletic programs.

Short of those options, UConn and UMass may want to consider lawyering up and suing someone for something to get their way. The college sports cartel is being attacked on a lot of different fronts, perhaps its power brokers will find a home for two erstwhile FBS programs twisting in the wind when faced with some legal pressure against its business model.

All of this and more will be on our minds as we head into a very important offseason for the program.

UConn held strong defensively in its season finale at UMass, taking home the third win of the season, 31-18.

Jim Mora’s squad was in control throughout thanks to three early UMass turnovers. The Huskies posted 240 rushing yards and only committed one turnover on the day while dominating time of possession.

The Huskies were up 19-0 by halftime. They weren’t highly proficient at turning those three turnovers into points, getting just nine out of it, but keeping the Minutemen off the board was key and eventually, UConn’s offense found the end zone. The first Husky touchdown came on a pick-six from Mumu Bin-Wahad.

UMass did try to make it interesting in the second half, scoring three touchdowns and getting to within two scores at multiple points. But after each of their first two touchdowns, UConn responded with a 70+ yard drive capped off by a Cam Edwards touchdown. The biggest struggle for both teams was converting the PAT/two-point conversion, as only one was converted the whole game out of seven attempts between the two teams.  

Critical penalties haunted UConn throughout the game and prevented them from making it a blowout. They found themselves in 3rd and long far too often due to a slew of different penalties.  They ended the day with nine penalties for 93 yards.  This showed on special teams especially, as UConn would end up with three separate penalties in punt or punt return formation.

Coming into this game, UMass was favored by 2.5 points, and all credit goes to the Huskies for pulling this win off late in the season and really dominating on the defensive side of the ball. Holding Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams, who had 234 rushing yards previously against Army, to only 51 yards on 18 attempts is pretty impressive, despite his two touchdowns. 

Freshman QB Tucker McDonald came in with 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter so he could see some reps and sophomore RB Hunter Clark had the same chance, ripping off a 26-yard rush on his first play.

UConn head coach Jim Mora postgame spoke about the future of the program: “Thankfully we have a president, a board of trustees, an athletic director, and a support group that are working as hard as they can to push for the things that we need to push for to be able to compete at the level that everyone that's associated with this program, inside and outside this building, wants to see.”

• UConn ended the day with a whopping seven tackles for loss, as well as four pass deflections and a sack

• The RBs were great. Cam Edwards had 19 rushes for 102 yards (5.4 per carry) and two touchdowns while Victor Rosa had 15 rushes for 71 yards (4.7 per carry) and one touchdown.

• Despite an apparent injury late in the game, Justin Joly had six receptions for 36 yards. He will end the season as the team’s leading receiver, with 578 yards, just beating out Cam Ross with 552. Those two are also tied for the team lead in touchdown receptions (two each) with Brett Buckman.  

• Neither team was exceptional on 3rd or 4th down, with a combined 5-for-21 on third down attempts and 0-for-2 on fourth down attempts. 

• Punter George Caratan had a quality performance, punting three times for 129 yards (43.0 yards per punt) with all three landing inside the 20-yard line. 

• Jackson Mitchell will end the season as the team’s leading tackler, racking up 113 tackles total (56 solo to 57 assisted). 

• Taquan Roberson ends the season with 197 completions on 338 attempts (58.3% completion rate) for 12 touchdowns and six interceptions, as well as 46 rushing attempts for 120 yards.

• With this win, UConn pulls within one game of the all-time matchup record between UMass, which now sits at 38-37 in favor of UMass. UConn also holds a two-game win streak in this matchup.
